The Difference Between Online Learning and Homeschool
School looks just a little different this year for parents and families across the country. Distance learning, hybrid learning, online learning, homeschooling, the list goes on! Whatever form of education you’ve chosen for your student, it’s likely not what you were expecting.
If it’s your first time navigating online learning, welcome! Whether you’re a BlueSky family or not, we want to help you make this year successful. One way of doing that for parents specifically is to understand that online learning is not homeschooling. There are huge differences between the two and in order to really make the most of online learning, it’s imperative that you understand them and find the right balance for you and your student.
Embrace a New Form of Communication
It’s no secret that there is a new normal of everyday life, but the new normal of online learning can be surprisingly difficult to adjust to. When all of a student’s classes and interactions are virtual, the way in which he or she communicates is much different.
This is the biggest adjustment we see in students, learning how to communicate in an online environment. Here at BlueSky, we always say that raising your hand online often looks more like texting or calling your teacher – which is encouraged! But it can be hard for students to feel comfortable reaching out to their educators in that way.
If your student is feeling uncomfortable reaching out directly to their teachers or counselor, encourage them and assure them that it’s expected! You could even help them write out their first communication if they’re feeling unsure.
This is truly a new skill! Learning how to communicate online doesn’t come naturally, so we are patient with our students, and parents should offer patience as students begin to adjust. Our BlueSky team is always ready and available to help!
Understand Parent Expectations
Parents or guardians are adjusting to this shift too, so it’s easy to settle into a groove of being “the teacher” but we provide structure and accountability to students with a certified team of educators. Parents don’t need to take on that responsibility with online learning, because that role is filled with a real teacher who is eager to provide your student with the guidance they need.
This may be the biggest difference between homeschooling and online learning! Parents need only act as a support system for students with online learning. Homeschooling requires a lot more from parents than online learning, which provides teachers and counselors for students.
We know that there are many families who are new to online learning this year, and we want to make the transition as smooth as possible. That’s why we make ourselves fully available to both students and parents!
