Minnesota’s Premier Online School: 25 Years of BlueSky
Many things have changed at BlueSky since opening in 2000, but one thing has remained constant: a true commitment to care, respect, and support for every student.
“Imagine no longer being held back by limitations. Imagine being productive, effective, and successful. Imagine producing results beyond what you could ever have imagined, despite your circumstances. Imagine being supported and listened to when you want to talk about your dreams. Imagine having someone on your side who will give you the reasons why you CAN have what you want.” This excerpt from BlueSky’s 2003 About page is a touching reminder that their dedication to students and personalized approach have been at the heart of their mission from the beginning—and remain just as strong today.
BlueSky was the first 100% online charter school in Minnesota. Over 25 years, they’ve based their curriculum around finding each and every student’s greatest potential —a pursuit that is well and alive today. As we celebrate a quarter century of BlueSky, we thought going back and looking at how things have changed would be a great way to honor the years gone by. Let’s take a look at BlueSky through the years:
The Early Days (2000-2005)
In 2000, BlueSky Online School launched with the mission to make high-quality online education accessible to all students, regardless of location or circumstances. At a time when online learning was still in its infancy, BlueSky was among the pioneers experimenting with digital classrooms and fully-remote education. In fact, when BlueSky first launched, a law was passed that required students to have at least two in-person school days a week, but because BlueSky was already established before this law was enacted, they were “grandfathered” in and able to remain 100% online. After a few years of trial and error and navigating the setbacks of early technology, BlueSky welcomed their first graduating class of 17 students in 2005.

Growth & Recognition (2006-2015)
As technology evolved, so did BlueSky’s approach to online education. The school expanded course offerings, bolstered student resources, and refined their curriculum. BlueSky’s enrollment skyrocketed with more and more Minnesota students seeing the value of attending school online:
“BlueSky gives you freedom; it lets you make your own decisions, gives you time to do what you want, when you want – that’s what I like about it.”
Jake, BlueSky Student 2007
In 2013, BlueSky earned accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, demonstrating their dedication to continuous improvement in curriculum, programs, and student-wellbeing.

Innovation & Personalization (2016-2023)
By 2016, online education was becoming mainstream—but BlueSky remained a leader, thanks to its years of experience and commitment to personalized, virtual learning. As they continued to improve the online learning experience for students and parents alike, BlueSky was also offering optional class field trips and extracurricular activities like eSports and SkyWriting.
In 2018, BlueSky received the Values Driven Award of Excellence, a prestigious award given to innovative educators throughout the country.
When the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools across the country to rapidly shift to remote learning, BlueSky was a major asset, well-equipped with the tools, resources, and expertise to guide other educators through the transition. While countless districts scrambled to move their curriculum online, BlueSky staff stepped up to support them, offering guidance and best practices to help teachers and administrators navigate the new environment of remote learning. During this time, BlueSky’s partnerships with state agencies and associations (MNOLA, MACS, MAAP, and more) expanded, further solidifying their expertise and strong reputation in the world of online education. The school also worked closely with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), providing feedback on programming and helping shape policies for statewide initiatives.
It’s evident that BlueSky’s input during the shutdown was invaluable, and today they remain a strong advocate for Minnesota students—ensuring a high-quality online education for everyone.
A Teacher’s Perspective: 25 Years of Change

Suzy Bordeau, an EL and social studies teacher at BlueSky since 2004, has witnessed firsthand how technology, online curriculum, and student experiences have evolved over the years. She shared some valuable insights on the early days of BlueSky and the changes she’s seen along the way:
Q: What’s been the biggest impact on students over the years?
“The flexibility has always been a major advantage, but what really stands out now is the level of support we can provide. From academic advisors to mental health resources, students today have more help available than ever before.
Q: What excites you about BlueSky’s future?
“The use of AI and adaptive learning is really exciting. I think we’ll see even more personalized learning experiences that help students succeed at their own pace.”
