Explore Unique Electives at BlueSky

How often have you thought, “Why didn’t I learn this in school?” Personal finances, mental health, career prep—the list goes on. Many of these important aspects of life are often missing from traditional classrooms. While core subjects like math, science, and English lay a strong foundation for students, they rarely tackle the real-world challenges of adulthood.

BlueSky’s electives are designed to fill that gap and give students a chance to explore their personal interests. From creative courses like Fashion Design to practical ones like Life Skills, our electives offer students the opportunity to dive into their passions and prepare for life beyond graduation. Let’s take a closer look at some of these unique electives and how they set students up for success:

Fashion Design

BlueSky’s Fashion Design elective allows students to dive into the world of fashion by exploring historical trends, understanding why we wear the clothes we do, and designing their own garments. Whether students dream of becoming a designer or simply want to define their personal style, this course offers a creative outlet to let them express themselves.

Life Skills

What are your values? It’s a question that shapes the person you are and the decisions you make. However, many people don’t take the time to reflect on their values and how they relate to the world and people around them until much later in life. BlueSky’s Life Skills elective focuses on these day-to-day aspects, helping students navigate their lives.

This course emphasizes defining personal beliefs, setting goals, and making value-based decisions. Students learn how to set goals, deal with media consumption and peer pressure, and develop problem-solving skills. The class also covers everyday topics like communication, relationships, wellness, personal safety, and building community.

Veterinary Science

For students with a passion for animals, the Veterinary Science elective is a great way to pursue that passion while earning credits. This course introduces students to the basics of animal care, health, and behavior, providing a foundation for those considering a career in veterinary medicine or related fields.

The course also covers ethical issues, public health concerns, and holistic and traditional treatments, giving students a well-rounded look at the range of careers in veterinary fields.

Travel Scandinavia

Want to explore Europe without leaving your desk? BlueSky’s Travel Scandinavia elective takes students on a virtual tour through the history, culture, and geography of Scandinavian countries. From Viking lore to modern-day sustainability efforts, this course is perfect for students with a curiosity for travel.

This course combines hospitality, tourism, and international business with a focus on Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. Students will learn about travel preparation, like using foreign currency, passports, visas, and creating itineraries, while also exploring the region’s people, food, arts, sports, and languages. BlueSky students can also meet with their classmates at an optional field trip to Scandinavian cultural centers in Minneapolis, like the Danish American Center, American Swedish Institute, and The Norway House

Support Groups

At BlueSky, we know that school comes with its personal challenges and is so much more than classwork—it’s about social and emotional growth too. Our BlueSky support groups, such as Attacking Anxiety and Mind Over Mood, provide students with tools to manage stress, build resilience, and connect with their classmates who share similar challenges. Other groups like The Real You and Who Am I encourage self-reflection and personal growth, helping students discover their identities and what’s important to them.
