How BlueSky Students Can Get a Head Start on Their Future

High school is about more than checking boxes and earning credits. It’s also one of the best opportunities students have to start exploring who they want to be and where they want to go next. At BlueSky Online, we believe that preparing for life after high school shouldn’t wait until senior year. That’s why BlueSky offers Career Academy as well as the opportunity for students to pursue PSEO courses.

Whether you have a clear career path in mind or are still figuring things out, both programs offer meaningful ways to explore interests, build skills, and gain credits that go beyond a standard high school diploma.

Career Academy: Build Skills and Earn Recognition in Your Area of Interest

In 2026, not every student is headed straight to a four-year university, and we completely understand that. BlueSky’s Career Academy program is designed for students who want to develop skills in a specific field, earn formal recognition for that work, and graduate with something meaningful to show for it.

Our Career Academies let students complete a curated sequence of courses in a particular area of study. Finish one, and you’ll receive a certificate and a green cord to wear at graduation.

BlueSky currently offers Career Academies in eleven areas:

  • Business — entrepreneurship, personal finance, social media marketing, and more
  • Computer Science — coding, cybersecurity, and computer applications
  • Culinary Arts — culinary skills, nutrition, and hospitality
  • Fine Arts — art appreciation, digital photography, and independent projects
  • Health — health careers, life skills, and nutrition and wellness
  • Hospitality & Tourism — travel, culinary arts, and customer experience
  • Law & Order — criminal justice, forensic science, and psychology
  • Music — music appreciation, guitar, songwriting, and production
  • STEM — engineering, computer science, math, and sciences
  • Visual Communications — design, photography, and fashion
  • World Languages — Spanish and American Sign Language

To complete a Career Academy, students need at least 1.5 credits in their chosen field (2.0 for STEM, 3.0 for World Languages), with at least 1.0 of those credits earned through BlueSky. A 3.0 GPA or higher within Academy courses is also required.

One thing worth knowing: many students have already completed requirements for a Career Academy without realizing it. If you’ve taken a handful of courses in a subject you enjoy, you might be closer to earning a certificate than you think. It’s worth checking in with your counselor to see what you’ve already accomplished.

Current students can register using the Career Academy Registration Form on the BlueSky website.

PSEO: Earn College Credit While You’re Still in High School

But maybe, like many high schoolers, you see yourself on a college campus and want to get a head start on your collegiate career. PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options) allows eligible 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students to take real college courses at Minnesota colleges and universities, earning both high school and college credit at the same time. Tuition, textbooks, and required course materials are provided at no cost to students or families.

That means actual college credits and a college transcript, at no cost to your family.

Students who participate in PSEO arrive at college already ahead with credits completed, experience with college-level material, and familiarity with what higher education looks and feels like. Many PSEO courses are available online, which works seamlessly alongside a BlueSky schedule, though in-person options are available at campuses across Minnesota as well.

Courses are taught by college faculty, graded by college standards, and recorded on a college transcript. Students are enrolled as both high school and college students simultaneously.

A few important things to know before jumping in:

  • These are genuine college courses with college-level rigor. They will likely be more demanding than standard high school classes and require greater independence and time management.
  • Because of federal privacy laws, grades and communications are not automatically shared with parents or BlueSky. Students are responsible for managing their own academic communication.
  • If attending in-person, students are responsible for their own transportation, though income-eligible families may qualify for mileage reimbursement through the state.
  • 10th grade students have specific eligibility requirements and course limitations. 11th and 12th grade students must meet each college’s individual admissions criteria, which may include GPA, class rank, or test scores.
  • Credits earned through PSEO are recorded on that college’s transcript, but whether another college will accept them later depends entirely on that institution’s transfer policies. It’s worth researching this if your student has a specific college in mind.

How do you get started? The first step is talking to your BlueSky counselor. They’ll help you figure out whether PSEO is a good fit, how potential courses align with your graduation plan, and what the application process looks like for the college or university you’re interested in.

Programs for Life Beyond BlueSky

Career Academy and PSEO serve different students with different goals, but they share the same purpose: helping BlueSky students leave high school with more than the minimum. More experience. More credentials. More confidence in whatever comes next.

The future can feel far away when you’re in the middle of high school, but the choices you make now have a real impact on where you land. Whether it’s earning college credits through PSEO, completing a Career Academy certificate in a field you’re passionate about, or both, BlueSky gives students options that can make a real difference.
