How to Keep Students Engaged in Online Learning

Transitioning from a traditional learning environment to online can be tricky in more than one way. Getting the hang of connecting virtually and navigating assignments online is just one of the new challenges facing students today. But perhaps one of the biggest challenges is staying engaged in a virtual classroom and in this new form of education.

Not getting to communicate in-person with teachers and other students takes a toll on a student. Learn how to help keep your student engaged in online learning with these tips.

Communicate in More than One Way

Replacing in-person communication means having to reach out in more than one way. Students oftentimes need small reminders to stay on top of their assignments, and that’s okay! Our teachers keep in contact with students and families beyond just the virtual classroom. Providing students with opportunities for one-on-one interaction with teachers drastically improves their school experience. Teachers and BlueSky social workers will reach out to students by email, phone call, and text depending on how the student prefers to communicate.

Creating multiple lines of communication with students is a great way to keep them on track and engaged in their studies. Physically being unable to set foot in an educational setting creates blurred lines and makes it more difficult to separate school from home.

Give Opportunities for Social Interaction

Socialization is incredibly important for adolescents. Right now, it’s more difficult than ever. Give your students the chance to connect with their peers during and after school. We have been an online school for over 20 years, but we know how important it is to allow students to socialize. We’ve created activities, clubs, and more so students can connect beyond their academics.

If you’re a BlueSky family, don’t hesitate to reach out to us about upcoming virtual and in-person events that will give students and families the chance to connect. At home, we find that a little more leniency for students who are eager to socialize goes a long way. Allow your student to spend more time connecting with their classmates, friends, and family to offset the lack of interaction during school hours.

Provide Positive Feedback

Our administrators are here to provide support for not only students but for parents as well. The change in schooling this year has caused nearly everyone to have to adjust. Students need support and part of that support is positive feedback. Don’t let a grade be the only reinforcement for hard work. Encourage students by giving them positive reinforcement and being open to listening to their stressors. Goal-setting is important for students, but getting praise when they meet those goals can be just as important as meeting the goal itself.

We hope that you are navigating through the last couple of months of this year well, if you are looking for more insight into successful online learning, contact us!
