Online Learning: How to Support Your Student Through Uncertainty

Students around the world are struggling with the changes and uncertainties they’re facing right now. Traditional schooling has shifted to differing levels of virtual and in-personal learning, and some students have opted for online learning. Any change in a child’s life can be tough, but there are ways to encourage students during these times. We have been learning from our students and their families this year in order to be a better resource for their success. Read on to learn how to encourage and support your student during these uncertain times.

Understanding a Students’ Stress

There has no doubt been many changes in the last year, and it affects each person and each student differently. Taking the time to understand the stress that your student is experiencing is essential in helping to support your teen or pre-teen. If your student is adjusting to online education for the first time this year, give them the time and space to settle into this new style of learning. Ask them questions and observe how they acclimate to their new learning environment. You can help your student simply by listening and being available to them through this new experience.

Allow for More Socialization Time

One of the biggest struggles for students is the lack of social interaction they’re currently getting. Being able to socialize with kids their age is incredibly important and it is lacking right now. Help your student by giving them the opportunity to create social interactions either through their online school or outside of it.

If you’re a BlueSky family, don’t hesitate to reach out to us about upcoming virtual and in-person events that will give students and families the chance to connect. At home, we find that a little more leniency for students who are eager to socialize goes a long way. Allow your student to spend more time connecting with their classmates, friends, and family to offset the lack of interaction during school hours.

Lean into the Support of Your Administration

We believe that students need a support system from a combination of parents, guardians, and the school community. Even though the majority of interactions with students are virtual, we still aim to connect with each student and give them the support they need. BlueSky offers students a supportive environment by assigning them to a counselor alongside their teachers. This helps students adjust to a new way of learning, but it also allows them to feel seen at the school. It helps students and administrators to feel more connected to one another.

We are all experiencing these changes for the first time. The whole world is adjusting to this new normal. Encourage your students to talk about how they are experiencing this strange time and be open to receiving their perspectives. We are always here to help!
