Principal's Message

As the holidays approach, we carve out time with our family and friends to celebrate spiritual practices, holiday traditions, and deepening relationships. The holiday season is also a stressful time for many of our families at BlueSky. Many people experience food scarcity, guilt about not having enough to share with their children, drug and alcohol abuse, and pressure from our culture to appear as a Norman Rockwell family.

Please be thoughtful this season to take time for self-care and check your expectations. Handmade gifts, special time together without conversations of difficult subjects, sharing what you have with others, and helping in your community is a mindful approach. Be aware of unrealistic media expectations to "have more" and remember what is truly important in your lives.

The following resources may be helpful during the holidays:
Smart Spending
Food Pantries
Free Community Meals
Homeless Shelter Directory
Free and Confidential Health & Human Service Info

Most importantly, we have a Social Work team that can guide you in ways to help other families (even at BlueSky) or find resources during the holiday season.

A great way to get involved at BlueSky is to join our parent group. We have a few interested parents who would like to start a parent organization. You can meet online and develop your mission as the parent/guardian of a BlueSky student. Please contact me at rparcheta@blueskyschool.org or Brenda Ritter at britter@blueskyschool.org to get involved.

Thank you for your continued support!

Renee Parcheta,
Student Services Director/Principal

BlueSky Stars

The BlueSky advisors have chosen to recognize these students for their hard work and dedication:

"Ben Hooghkirk is a new senior this year and demonstrates star qualities in his positive and regular communications with staff and his dedication to his classes. He also recently recommended BlueSky to a friend that has now enrolled! Ben says, 'BlueSky gives me the opportunity to start learning the responsibility I'll need to be a successful college student and member of society.'"

"Eboni R is a shining example of what a BlueSky Star student represents. As a new student, she has quickly learned how things work here, does exceptionally well in her classes and communicates regularly with staff. She signed up for the Peer to Peer program and won the Halloween costume contest earlier this month! Eboni says 'I love being a student at BlueSky because the learning can be tailored to best fit your learning needs.'"

Winter Hang Out

BlueSky students and their guests are invited to attend the Winter Hang Out at the BlueSky offices on Thursday, December 15th from 4-7 pm.

This is a great way to hang out with fellow BlueSky students and have some fun before the holidays. Come dressed up! Cosplay (favorite character from any cartoon, movie, anime, manga, videogame, etc), ugly sweater, festive costume...have fun!

We plan to have: music, games, snacks, cookie decorating, crafts, prizes, and much more!

RSVP using this form to let us know how many to plan for. Contact Megan Hollenkamp at mhollenkamp@blueskyschool.org with any questions.

BlueSky's 2015-2016 Annual Report is now available for the public to view. Each fall, BlueSky sends a report on the previous year to MDE that includes our Mission and Vision statements, an overview of our program, innovative practices implemented, governance and management, authorizer goals, future plans and more. You can see past annual reports on the BlueSky website.

Social Work Resource

OASIS (Osseo Area Source of Information and Support) programs are open to all parents, caregivers, and staff. Presentations take place on Tuesdays from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Topics covered in the 2016-2017 calendar range from ADHD, anxiety, grief, depression, PTSD, technology, and more. Check out the list for more information and future meeting dates.

Anoka Jail Trip

Last month BlueSky organized a trip to the Anoka Jail and 911 Center. 29 students/guests attended the tour. The trip was planned to get a behind the scenes look at what it is like to work in careers related to criminal justice. A BlueSky student commented, "It was so interesting to see and I gained a future job idea. While on the trip, I thought about becoming a 911 operator."
