Family and Consumer Sciences

American Regional Cooking

Students will learn the basics of cooking while they make and sample foods from around the United States. Students will explore each region by learning about its history and unique types of foods. Students will learn cooking techniques and will be given recipes that them  to practice their skills. This is a great class for either beginning or experienced cooks. There is something for everyone in this course. Students will need to take digital pictures of theircooking projects and supply the recipe ingredients.

Baking

This class will include baking techniques and actual recipes for students to follow, share, and have critiqued by their friends and family. Students will learn about the essentials of baking ingredients and techniques and practice making recipes. This is a hands-on class, so students should be prepared to have fun baking, eating and sharing their projects. Students will need to take digital pictures of their cooking projects and supply the recipe ingredients.

Parenting

Parenting is a skill that the vast majority of us will need at some point in our lives. Learn how this demanding task can also be the most rewarding. This course is recommended for both male and female students who are either parenting already or plan to in the future. Children don't come with a manual – but this course will help!

Investing in My Future

Who wants to be a millionaire? Building a net worth of $1MM is possible if students start young and use the principles learned from this course. Investing In My Future is a course designed to help students understand the impact of delayed gratification and their individual choices on their future earnings potential. Real world topics covered will include income, money management, spending and credit, insurance, taxes, real estate, as well as saving and investing. This course will provide the foundational understanding to make informed personal financial decisions so the student can experience lifelong financial freedom. Semester 1 only.

Web and Computer Skills

Web Design

Web Design is an introductory course in web page design using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). The class will explore the following subjects: graphic design, media streaming, hosting services, and scripting languages. At the end of the course, all students will have created a personal web page. Semester 2 only.

Web 2.0

Students will develop blogs, slideshows, media presentation, comic strips, podcasts and apply the tools of the Internet. The guiding principle of this course will be centered on implementing the tools of communication, collaboration, presentation and recreation as a means of finding information, locating groups that share your passions, creating things via the web and communicating within the online community. Semester 1 only.

Keyboarding

By using a software application program and engaging in internet-based learning activities, students will learn correct keyboarding techniques which will help them concentrate on creating the message they wish to communicate, rather than searching for the correct key. The students will also learn the importance of strong keyboarding skills for future careers. The formatting of memos, business letters, reports, and other business documents will be taught.. Semester 1 only.

Computer Applications

This course is an introductory course designed to teach students fundamental computer concepts as well as serve as an introduction to the Microsoft Office suite. The focus of this course will include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. This course will briefly cover email, Internet and Windows file management, as the course prepares students for the 21st century workplace.  Semester 2 only.

Intro to Computer Programming

This course is designed for a student that has no previous experience in computer programming.  Students will learn how to design forms that react to user events such as clicking a button, understand and use various data types and variables, make logical decisions using if-then-else statements, use simple looping structures and program event procedures. Semester 2 only.

Students will explore and develop the soft skills and other employability skills necessary to function successfully in a work environment. They will study the attributes that employers look for in an employee, workplace expectations, co-worker relations, conflict management and communication. The use of technology in the workplace and the importance of life-long learning in finding career satisfaction will also be covered. Open to students in grades 10, 11, and 12. Semester 2 only.

Work Ethics

This semester-long course will help students define ethical behavior and identify what goes into making the right decision. Businesses, as well as individuals, are faced with making the right decisions every day. As young people enter the workforce they may encounter a variety of ethical problems that require tough decisions. Ethical decision making is a skill that will serve students in every aspect of their lives.  Semester 1 only.

Careers

Career Planning

Career Planning provides a foundation for successful school-to-career transition after high school or college. Students complete self-assessments to analyze interests and skills, participate in a virtual job shadowing opportunity and research careers and college programs to select a career pathway. Job-search activities include résumé writing, interviewing, and composing career-related correspondence. Employment expectations and the need for lifelong learning are also emphasized. Each student creates an online portfolio in the Minnesota Career Information System that remains on file for several years after graduation and complete a final Career Plan. Semester 1 only.

Graphic Design

This course introduces students to graphic design as a form of visual communication that uses type, image, form and color. Projects explore design concepts, practices and processes while encouraging creative problem solving, critiques and discussion. Investigation of career pathways in visual arts and print technology provides the student with an artistic and business perspective of this exciting field. Students who take this class should be comfortable experimenting with technology. Semester 2 only.
