This class offers an art credit and so it will offer recipes for cooking as well as recipes for the cookbook project. Each student in the class will be making a recipe book as well as cooking recipes. Some weeks the assignment will involve cooking in the kitchen; some weeks the students will be designing recipe pages for their own cookbook. The elements and principles of design will be discussed. Kitchen safety, food safety, nutrition, cooking terms, and preparing simple meals and snacks will also be discussed. Students do not need to have any kitchen experience. Requires camera and the ability take and submit digital images of food and cook book projects.

This class will expose students to some of the “greats” throughout art history, as well as contemporary working artists. Students will learn the elements and principles of design, and have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and techniques in their own art making. Personal reflection and expression in both the art-making and written assignments will be encouraged. Semester 2 only. Requires ability to take digital images.

Through viewing photographs, recent video footage of working artists, interviews, and reading articles, students will take a virtual tour of artist groups currently working around the globe. Students will learn about the craft of each region, make their own hands-on version of it, and discuss contemporary issues facing these artist groups. When the opportunity exists, students will use available technologies in the latter portion of the class to create a collaborative online art project with students from another culture. Ability to take digital images strongly recommended, but alternative track available for students without cameras.

Students will learn the basics of photo composition and begin to look at the world around them in a different perspective as through the "eye" of the digital camera. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles of design and learn how to apply them to their visual perception. Most importantly, students will learn that the world around them can be viewed as artwork - no matter how "ordinary" one may think of his/her own environment. Requires ability to take digital pictures.

How have people decorated themselves throughout history? Across the globe? In contemporary USA? And why? In this class students will look at the history of fashion as an art form, and discuss how style reflects identity and creates subcultures today. Students will look at various style inspirations and practice hands on skills in both fashion and costume design. Assignments will range from design sketches to full completion of projects (possible projects include redesigning an existing article of clothing, mask making, creating an original garment from scratch, costume design and storyboarding, and creating accessories out of recycled materials. Sewing is strongly encouraged, but not necessary in this class). Semester 1 only. Ability to take digital images strongly recommended, but alternative track available for students without cameras.

This basic fundamental course offers a foundation of visual vocabulary built on the elements and principles of design. Students will be able to explore works of various artists through the ArtsConnectEd web site associated with the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Walker Art Center. Students will also create various projects that demonstrate their understanding of artistic design as well as learn about various movements in art history, how they evolved through the ages, and how they can use this information in creating their own works of art. Ability to take digital images recommended, but alternative track available for students without cameras.

How do instruments work? What makes that tune stop you in your tracks? Students will study music through the ages learning about Classical, Jazz, Movie music, and more. Daily activities will include listening and responding to music, and the study of basic music theory. Semester 2 only. Requires media player and ability to hear sound on computer.

Are you a member of a musical performance group such as choir, band, orchestra, or an honors music program? This course is a way for students who are members of a musical performance group such as a choir, band, orchestra, or honors music program. Students will receive credit for the time they give to your rehearsals and performances each week. Students will be expected keep accurate data on their musical performance hours, and develop an understanding of the dedication it takes to be an awesome musician. Class activities will include lessons on musical performance, basic music theory, and careers in music.

This course allows students to continue the study of a musical instrument. Through one-on-one instruction, students will learn about how to play their instrument better and work on improving their playing skills. Regular activities will include a weekly webcam lesson, recording a weekly playing assignment, and short written activities. Enrollment is limited, so inquire soon! Requires webcam and musical instrument (not including voice or piano).

How many percussion instruments are there? What influence or involvement have they had on history in different countries? This class includes listening and analyzing musical examples of percussion instruments from the drum set to the piano. Students will study different musical styles from marching bands to jazz music and how percussion affects history and culture. Students will learn to read rhythms and possibly musical notes, write and perform their own musical songs, and build their own musical instrument. Semester 1 only. Requires media player & ability to hear sound on computer.

Students should enter this class prepared to listen, experience, and react to music from around the world that they might have never heard before! Students are offered the chance to connect with different musical genres from different countries and ways of life around the globe. Daily activities will include listening and responding to music, and the study of how music is related to many different cultures. Semester 1 only.
