Career Exploration Students identify strengths, interests, and skills that may be used in the work world. Time will be spent experiencing work skills, researching career options, and educational requirements for a variety of jobs. Child Development In this course for grades 9-12, students will study child development from conception to adolescence, primarily focusing on early childhood. Students will examine the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects/milestones of the developing child. Observation of children within various preschool settings is required in order to do assessment and evaluation. A theme-based unit will be designed and implemented in an early childhood classroom. Diversified Occupations Seminar & Diversified Occupations Work Experience Students receive 1/2 semester credit for the program Seminar and up to 1 semester credit for the program Work Experience, depending on the amount of hours you work. Work experience may be done through paid or volunteer positions. Seminar topics include Job Safety, Labor Laws, Time Management, Career Exploration, Job Skills (Seeking, Maintaining and Advancing), and Financial Management. Students are required to stay current in all classes, maintain their job, and complete all program assignments to receive full credit for the semester. Entrepreneurship Students will be given an overview of the knowledge required to start and grow a new business. New business start up procedures and laws taught will be specific to the State of Minnesota. In addition, students will be shown how to recognize and develop their talents, creativity and skills in order to become a successful, competitive part of the entrepreneurial workforce. Intro to American Regional Cooking Learn the basics of cooking while sampling foods from around the United States. This is a great class for the beginning cook or those who are more experienced. Keyboarding & Computer Applications Students develop, and improve, their typing-keying skill and speed while learning basic MS Word and Excel skills. They are given weekly speed goals and required to submit a practice report each Friday. It is essential students complete all assignments each week to assure skill development. Online Baking If you or your family have a sweet tooth, than this is the class for you! Learn about the basics of baking while practicing essential baking techniques. This is a fun class that explores everything from a career in baking to flour types and sweeteners. Choose from delicious recipes each week. Parenting Parenting is a skill that the vast majority of us will need at some point in our lives. Learn how this demanding task can also be the most rewarding. This course is recommended for both male and female students. Since children don't come with a manual the following topics will be covered: Understanding Parenting, Becoming a Parent, Caring, Nurturing and Guiding Children and Parenting Concerns. Photoshop This elective class is designed for the student who has a sound understanding of basic computers and would like a challenging, yet fun, learning experience as they learn Adobe Photoshop CS2. Students will spend a great deal of time learning how to use layers and masks to create and enhance images. Strong computer skills are recommended. Software provided via remote desktop.
