Career Exploration

Students identify strengths, interests, and skills that may be used in the work world. Time will be spent experiencing work skills, researching career options, and educational requirements for a variety of jobs. The student will develop a high school and post-secondary education plan and a career exploration portfolio that will remain on file until they graduate.

Child Development

In this course for grades 9-12, students will study child development from conception to adolescence, primarily focusing on early childhood.  Students will examine the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects/milestones of the developing child.  Observation of children within various preschool settings is required in order to do assessment and evaluation.  A theme-based unit will be designed and implemented in an early childhood classroom.

Employability Skills 

This elective semester long courses will focus on the skills necessary for gainful employment.  Students will be exposed to real life experience to become familiar with expectations of employers.  These courses are designed for every student planning to enter the workforce!

Entrepreneurship

Students will be given an overview of the knowledge required to start and grow a new business. New business start up procedures and laws taught will be specific to the State of Minnesota. In addition, students will be shown how to recognize and develop their talents, creativity and skills in order to become a successful, competitive part of the entrepreneurial workforce.

Health Careers 

Are you interested in a career as a dental hygienist, LPN, midwife, chiropractor, Radiological Technician or any other career that involves the medical field?  If so this is the class for you.  We will be investigating different medical fields of study.  You will learn about the school you are required to take to pursue a degree in one of the many health fields and view what it is like to work in the medical field.

Intro to American Regional Cooking

Learn the basics of cooking while sampling foods from around the United States.  This is a great class for the beginning cook or those who are more experienced.  There is something for everyone.  You will need to take digital pictures of your cooking assignments.

Keyboarding & Computer Applications

This semester-long course is designed to familiarize you with computers and some software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and multimedia presentations.  You will also have the opportunity to learn about the importance of correct keyboarding techniques and to learn about different keyboarding/computer application careers.

Online Baking

If you or your family have a sweet tooth, than this is the class for you!  Learn about the basics of baking while practicing essential baking techniques.  This is a fun class that explores everything from a career in baking to flour types and sweeteners.  Choose from delicious recipes each week.  Digital pictures also need to be attached for the items baked.

Parenting

Parenting is a skill that the vast majority of us will need at some point in our lives. Learn how this demanding task can also be the most rewarding. This course is recommended for both male and female students. Since children don't come with a manual the following topics will be covered: Understanding Parenting, Becoming a Parent, Caring, Nurturing and Guiding Children and Parenting Concerns.

Photoshop

This elective class is designed for the student who has a sound understanding of basic computers and would like a challenging, yet fun, learning experience as they learn Adobe Photoshop CS2.  Students will spend a great deal of time learning how to use layers and masks to create and enhance images.  Strong computer skills are recommended.  Software provided via remote desktop.

Work Ethics

This semester-long course aims to help you identify what goes into making the right decision.  Think about the last difficult decision you made.  Was there more than one direction to take?  Businesses, as well as individuals, are faced with making the right decisions every day.  This class explores and identifies ethical behavior and what goes into making the right decision.  As young people enter the workforce they may encounter a variety of ethical problems that require tough decisions.  Ethical decision making is a skill that will serve students in every aspect of your life.  If you complete the class coursework successfully and are 18 years of age, you can also earn additional work experience credits. First semester only.
