Business Math

This class is designed to introduce students to improving their essential math skills. We will start out looking at positive and negative numbers, decimals, fractions, percents and equations. We will then apply those skills to budgeting, balancing and reconciling checkbooks, markups and markdowns, interest, and credit.

BST/Grad Prep

This class is geared to help students who need to pass a math test in order to graduate.  The fundamentals of math are the focus of the class.  Along with developing the skills that will be tested, strategies for taking standardized tested are covered.

Game Math

It's game time!  In this class we will explore real world applications of mathematics in games.  Topics will include decimals, fractions, formulas, angles, slope, probability and more!  Some of the games we will use to learn about the topics will be baseball, billiards, skiing and various casino games.

General Math

This class is designed to prepare students for future math classes.  It includes the NCTM Standards.  Students will cover information on Numbers and Operations, Data Analysis and Probability, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections and Representation.  We will start out looking at Decimals and Integers, Equations and Inequalities, and then move on to Exponents, Factors, and Fractions.  We then look at Operations with Fractions and Ratios, Rates, Proportions and Percents.  Geometry and Measurement are covered.  We will touch on Graphing in the Coordinate Plane, Displaying and Analyzing Data and Using Probability.

Geometry

This is a first year course in high school Geometry.  In Geometry, student’s understanding of the properties of real numbers becomes a base for building reasoned geometric arguments.  Methods of reasoning, construction, the coordinate plane, and types of measurement are established.  Students further develop a firm understanding of the properties and applications of lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, similarity, right angle trigonometry, circles, and transformations. Formulas for perimeter and area are applied to composite and irregular plane shapes.

Pre-Algebra Applications

Sewing by the numbers is a class for students who will use math concepts and apply them to sewing.  Students will work with sewing material and apply math skills.  Students can either sew by machine or hand.  If they are sewing by machine, they need to know how to use the machine.  They will be graded on their sewing project and their understanding of math concepts.  Some of the concepts covered will include information covered in the Pre Algebra class with application to sewing.

Grades 8-12; semester; maximum enrollment of 20

PLATO math classes run the range of General Math all the way to Algebra 2.  These courses are self-paced and are broken down into concept-based modules.  Each module is then broken down into a tutorial session followed by a mastery test.  Once a course is complete, the students may move on to the next class in the sequence.
