Made of Clay: China's Ceramic History

This semester long course will begin to introduce you to the people, the history, and the culture of China by looking at clay sculpture, pottery, and other art objects from the time that the Great Wall of China was built around 200 B.C. until the early Twentieth Century. We will learn about the life sized terra cotta clay army of the first emperor, the beautifully elegant porcelain vases of the Ming Dynasty, the everyday pottery of the peasants, and the lively clay horses and camels of the Tang dynasty. By learning about what people have made, we are able to learn more about the people themselves.  We will also be using an air drying clay to create our own piece of pottery.

My Solution

I envision very open-ended projects that allow the students to create whatever they think up in response to the assignment. An example of this might be to create a board game that is a metaphor for life, or to write a visual story, using panels much like a comic book, that reflects an especially memorable moment in their life. The focus will be  on individuality and personal problem solving.
