BST/GRAD Prep Reading

This class is geared to help students who need to pass a reading test in order to graduate. The fundamentals of reading are the focus of the class. Along with developing the skills that will be tested, strategies for taking standardized tests are covered.

Creative Writing A

This inspiring creative writing course presents a common language of writers called "The 6 Traits of Writing." Utilizing 6 trait skills hones personal writing abilities and provides richer critique and peer evaluation language. Weekly lessons showcase works by current professional writers, yet launch you, the student, into your own original creations which could become a working portfolio. 

 

English 9

This class is a comprehensive English Language Arts course that will build skills in the areas of reading, writing, and communication. The text offers many selections that stretch readersÂ’ imaginations and encourage active reading. Students will interact with what they read across a wide variety of genres as they gain reading comprehension strategies and make connections with what they are studying. The course also covers the fundamentals of composition and is aligned to Minnesota State Standards.

This class is a comprehensive English Language Arts course that will build skills in the areas of reading, writing, and communication.  The text covers American literature and its reflection of history from our origins through present day.  Students interact across a wide variety of genres, gaining reading comprehension, discussion and written expression strategies while formulating multilateral connections with what they are studying.

 The course also covers the fundamentals of composition and is aligned to Minnesota State Standards.

This class is a comprehensive English Language Arts course that will build skills in the areas of reading, writing, and communication.  The text covers a variety of world literature selections including Shakespeare, Homer and Dickens.  Students will interact with what they read across a wide variety of genres as they gain reading comprehension strategies and make connections with what they are studying.  The course also covers the fundamentals of composition and is aligned to Minnesota State Standards.  Students planning to go on to college can choose to focus on academic writing while other students can focus more on technical writing.

Getting to Know the Bard: A Study of William Shakespeare and His Works

In this class, you will study the biographical history of William Shakespeare and Elizabethan England.  A brief study drama and the Elizabethan Theater will also be a part of our background introduction. You will read and study several of Shakespeare’s greatest  works including his plays and sonnets.  Shakespeare’s texts will be available via the Internet, and you will participate in various Web-based projects.  Your reading, responding, critical thinking and critical writing skills will be developed and sharpened.  Even if you have never studied the works of William Shakespeare before, this class will be informative, interesting and fun!  To enroll or not to enroll – there’s no question!

Harry Potter 

This is a course designed to take a critical look at the Harry Potter book series. Students discuss what makes the Harry Potter books popular and/or controversial, while looking at the development of characters, language, plot and symbolism. This course is designed to get the most out of Potter while savoring every enchantment and spell! Perhaps we’ll even get the opportunity to design our own patronis! 

 

Media and Society

The average 8-18 year old in the United States spends almost 6 1/2 hours consuming media in a typical day.  Media is a term for anything that communicates, such as books, magazines, computers, radio, film, television, music, Internet…  Media are very integral part of our lives and therefore they generate popular interest and debate about any social problem that we can think of. This class will take a critical look at media's role in society. It will help you improve your ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce media messages of all kinds.

Native American Literature

Ever wonder why the opossum’s tail is bare or where fire came from?  This class is designed for students who want to expand their literary horizons by reading novels, essays, poetry, and short stories written by Native American authors.  Students will have the opportunity to become more familiar with issues facing American Indians through literature.  Since a lot of reading is required, students must possess good reading skills.

Newspaper

This elective class is designed for the student who enjoys writing.  Students will learn newspaper fundamentals, journalistic ethics, conduct interviews and write articles for the Blue Sky School Newspaper.

Popular Teen Literature

What is it like to live with parents who expect perfection? How about living in foster care or helping your parentsstrugge to make ends meet? Experience the challenges and successes of being a young adult through the eyes of another teen. Each story allows students to enter the lives of teens their own age, to experience the issues and situations they encounter, while examining and evaluating the decisions they face.

Read & Write 1

Read the work of successful writers for many purposes: study techniques and methods; learn about the process of writing; model or create your own works by following the examples in the work of others. Write many types of writing about many types of subjects. Evaluate and encourage your peers by reading and commenting on their work. Learn about a common way to communicate ideas of writing called the 6 Traits.

Reading For Success

Students in this class will become successful, active readers in any subject.  The purpose is to teach students the reading process, critical reading strategies and when to use them, reading tools and organizers, text organization, and other essential skills that will aid in reading comprehension. 

 

Sticks & Stones. . .Playing with the Power of Poetry

"Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."  In this course, we will explore the power of words, in contrast to this childhood idiom we have all heard.  We will exlpore the work of many poets, looking at typical poetic conventions of imagery, form, and style, to name a few.  But then we will be playing with words ourselves, creating a range of poetry, and critiquing our own work and the work of others.

A student once wrote - "Having a voice in this generation can be hard. Expressing your voice can be harder, but being heard can sometimes be the hardest." This class will help you find your writing voice and use it. Turn your writing inward and find yourself on a road to self discovery. Turn your wirting outward and write to be heard. Really heard. Assignments are practical with real life consequences. Got something to say? say it here. This class offers practical writing exercises/assignments with real life consequences. Not for the weak of heart.

Refreshes basic skills and introduces strategies for fluent readers.  Provides a foundation for writing by teaching strategies, such as using graphic organizers, separating ideas into paragraphs, and varying sentence structures.  Learn the key reading comprehension and critical thinking skills needed to work with the written resources in a typical workplace.  Provides instruction in grammar and mechanics.
