Karen Kraco is a licensed 7-12 Life Sciences Teacher.
I’ve taught science at a public high school in Boston, Massachusetts, at an alternative program here in Minnesota, and at a Minneapolis charter school serving East African students. At each of those schools, my students taught me much about teaching, and about life.
But when I arrived at Blue Sky, I felt as if I had found my teaching home. It’s great to be able to work one-on-one with students. It’s a privilege to get to know my home base students and their families. And I’m honored to have the chance to work with top-notch teachers, administrators, and support staff. It seems as if everyone at Blue Sky works toward one main goal: to serve our students well. What I love about Blue Sky is that students can be comfortable being themselves. It’s a place where students can learn to work past the challenges in their lives and get the support they need to succeed. A little about the rest of my life: I grew up in Chicago, went to college in Indiana, then headed out to the East Coast for graduate school in molecular biology. I was fascinated by the complex workings of the chemicals that make up our cells. But eventually I decided I didn’t want to do research. I loved science, but I wanted to work with people, not lab equipment. So I went back to school for my teaching certificate and found that teaching high school students about science is tremendously fun and rewarding. I have a second professional love: working with words. Over the years I’ve taken time off from teaching to take journalism courses and work as an editor and writer. But when I’m not teaching, I miss the students, so I keep gravitating back. When I’m not sitting at my computer, you’ll probably find me outdoors. Hiking, camping, paddling, cross-country skiing, biking, and bird watching are among my favorite activities. I play the piano to relax, mainly jazz and classical music. I also like to knit and sew, work in the garden, tackle projects around the house, and read (mainly nonfiction—I’m curious about everything!). |
