Where do you live?

I live in Plymouth, on the west side of the Twin Cities. Before I lived here, I lived in St. Louis Park and Minnetonka, and for about a year in Boulder, Colorado. I grew up in West St. Paul, where the BlueSky office is located.

What is your role in keeping BlueSky running smoothly?

I teach courses in in special education and I offer support to students in their science courses. Often I work with a teacher and student together, to find a way that works best for the student to learn.

BlueSky is special because the students truly do come first.

Why did you choose BlueSky?

While I could work at many other places, I choose to work at BlueSky because of the positive and professional people. At BlueSky, I consistently hear, “Let me know if you'd like some help with that.” It isn't only teachers saying it to students, but from staff to staff, too. The atmosphere is one of pitching in to make everything work or work better than it is at the moment. This attitude makes for a very healthy and fulfilling place to work and to learn new things, which is very important to me.

What do you think makes BlueSky special?

BlueSky's attention to each student is what makes it special. Students are typically surprised to learn that their teachers will “go the extra mile” for them. Switching from attending school in a building where you must follow a rigid schedule and have very few freedoms as to how you complete your work can be quite an adjustment. Yet our welcome team, home base teachers, and our supportive “all for one and one for all” school attitude make it easier for students to design and structure how they learn best. I have heard it many times as I congratulate a graduate, “I couldn't have done it without all the support!”

What do you like to do when you're not teaching?

With every passing year, this changes quite a bit. Currently I really enjoy replacing grass lawns with perennial gardens and shrubs for wildlife, teaching my Rat Terrier, Jack, new tricks, and reading and trying to solve mysteries. A couple of things that I continue to enjoy no matter how many years go by are watching movies and knowing about actors and actresses, and learning new ways to use excel.

If there were one thing you could tell people about BlueSky, what would it be?

BlueSky Online School is a good place for learners who are not satisfied with traditional public education. Independent students who want to learn without distractions can enjoy support and thrive here.
